Livestock Disease Research

The Iowa Livestock Health Advisory Council (ILHAC) was created to strengthen research on livestock diseases of high relevance and impact on the state. Funds from this special appropriation provide seed money for research projects, with priority given to those projects with significant potential for economic benefit for the livestock industry. This seed money has recently resulted in development of effective vaccines for porcine circovirus and laying hen peritonitis as well as prototype vaccines for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. Funding will allow more animal disease research projects to be funded in areas of highest importance to livestock producers, ultimately decreasing the impact of disease on domestic production and better assuring continuation of current and growth of future trade in animal protein products.
